Catalysts for electrochemical ammonia oxidation: Trend, challenge, and promise

Developing sustainable and clean energy technology is critial to address the current environmental crisis. As an carrier, hydrogen has been getting attention due its abundance, high density, zero carbon emission. Due difficulty of storage transport, electro-oxidation ammonia shows great potential for renewable since it satisfies both supply protection as a carbon-free fuel with content. However, sluggish reaction low durability. Understanding complicated mechanism intermediates conducive developing efficient electrocatalysts catalytic activity This review begins oxidation technologies their principles. The two typical mechanisms electro-oxidation, Oswin-Salomon Gerischer-Mauerer mechanism, are discussed, poisoning species included. Then, classified into Pt-based catalysts non-noble metal-based catalysts, performances reviewed various strategies. Based on progress electrochemical challenges future insight discussed proposed.
